A beginners guide to proper CBD dosage.

Confused MonkeyThe popularity of Cannabidiol (CBD) oil for treating multiple ailments such as chronic pain, insomnia, epileptic seizures, drug abuse, arthritis pain, depression, and anxiety has resulted in an explosion of individuals actively exploring and using CBD products.
 
Given the growth of CBD and its various forms (e.g. Liquid CBD Oil/Tinctures/Extracts, CBD E-Liquid/Vape Cartridges, CBD Edibles, CBD Isolates/Concentrates), many people are confused about which form they should take and how much.
 
As many states are moving towards the legalization of marijuana, many doctors remain hesitant to prescribe cannabinoids like CBD. There are two primary reasons for their hesitancy:
 
  1. Doctors cannot prescribe (only recommend) cannabinoids, because there’s no universally accepted recommended daily allowance (RDA) or dosing regimen for all people.
  2. Most medical schools are just beginning to include the study of cannabidiol (CBD) therapy in their pharmacology and medical school curriculum's.

When considering the form of CBD, you should take and the dosing it’s important to keep in mind; human beings are not physiologically equal, everyone is different.
 
That means there are several variables that can influence the effect of CBD such as; metabolism, weight, diet, environment, genetics, and the form of CBD taken.
 
How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?
 
As stated earlier, there currently is not universally accepted dosing regimen for CBD consumption however, an excellent starting point is a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic that suggests CBD dosages based on scientific research, publications, traditional use, and expert opinion. Keep in mind, CBD dosages, effects, and the duration of treatment depend mainly on the ailment and of course several other physiological factors.
 
Mayo Clinic dosing recommendations for various illnesses:
  • Loss of Appetite in Cancer Patients 2.5mg of THC (orally), with or without 1mg of CBD for six weeks.
  • Chronic Pain 2.5-20mg of CBD [with or without THC] (orally).
  • Epilepsy 200-300mg of CBD (orally) daily.
  • Movement Problems resulting from Huntington’s Disease 10mg of CBD per kg of body weight daily for six weeks (orally).
  • Sleep Disorders 40mg-160mg of CBD (orally).
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Symptoms Cannabis plant extracts containing 2.5-120 milligrams of a THC/CBD combination daily for 2-15 weeks. Patients typically use eight sprays within any three hours, with a maximum of 48 sprays in any 24-hour period.
  • Schizophrenia 40-1,280mg oral CBD daily. [S]
  • Glaucoma A single sublingual CBD dosage of 20-40mg (>40 mg may increase eye pressure).
Given the many variabilities the safe approach is to begin experimenting with minimal suggested CBD dosages and then gradually increase dosage until you experience the desired effect. I know, it’s not an exact science but its as good as it gets for now.
 
Fortunately, there is a tremendous amount of ongoing research on the use and effects of CBD, which means more reliable and consistent dosing recommendations are soon to come.
